Our client, the National Union of Students is looking to appoint two new Lay members. You will help the NUS ensure effective governance arrangements are in place and rigorously monitor the company’s performance.  

The student movement has always been at the forefront of change. Over the past 94 years, NUS, students’ unions and partners have led and witnessed much change in education and the broader society, and the Union will continue to do so in the years to come.

The NUS is committed to delivering a transformative educational experience that creates a just and sustainable future. They aim to improve students' lives by shaping education, empowering individuals, and developing, protecting and championing students’ unions.

Their volunteer committee members donate a wealth of knowledge and expertise to support this non-profit organisation. You will work closely with Directors and Student Leadership across the organisation to ensure the NUS has efficient and sound operations that enable them to drive change as well as support their members, Students’ Unions.

Key Skills:

You will be the kind of person who would feel comfortable working in a student-led, democratic environment and who values equal opportunities. You will use your highly collaborative style to deliver real progress against a challenging, political mission.

As a collaborative and supportive person, you will have previous experience on a Board or Subcommittee.

The Lay members each bring a particular skill and a background of expertise.

Finance, audit and risk expertise

NUS are seeking lay members with qualifications and expertise within finance, risk and audit. They have one position available on their Finance and Risk Committee which meets four times per annum and one position on their Audit, Risk and Remuneration Committee which meets three times per annum.

Non-Profit organisation’s like NUS can only succeed through the support of great volunteers who share our passion for students driving change. 

As a committee lay member you are at the centre of the action for the organisation. The more effective the committees and Boards of Trustees, the greater difference you and NUS will make. The best committees and boards are also diverse, with people who have a real understanding of the needs of those the NUS are here to help as well as skills spanning technology, marketing, communications, philanthropy, international development, financial, business and management experience.

An understanding and acceptance confidentiality duties and responsibilities, including an understanding of the difference between governance and management functions.
